Mens Walk 2013 – Not quite the Sunburn of last year

When I got up yesterday morning and looked out of the window, it was very white, with snow blowing everywhere.  Normally not too much of a problem except it was the day of the Mens Walk, a 10k walk around Gloucester to raise money for Cotswold Care Hospice.  Last year it was a beautiful day with the main risk being of Sunburn – this year it looked more at risk of hypothermia.  Nevertheless, I got the bus into Gloucester, got to Kingsholm and then walked around the 10k course, coming back to the Pie, Pint and to watch Gloucester narrowly beat London Welsh.

The registration was much quicker this year, as we had already been sent numbers and T Shirts, so that was a bit of a doddle, it was then a case of wrapping up warm as we got ready to go.  This was the first year I had done the walk on my own, so had selected a bunch of tunes on my Iphone to keep me going and with a blare of a horn, we were off.  A lap of the very soggy Gloucester pitch put us out onto the road and off by the Railway Station.  As we were a big group, there were quite a few cars beeping their horns in support which was great.

As we got down onto Metz way and passed the new Railway Triangle Development, the group spread out and the weather had abated a bit so while it was cool, it had stopped snowing.  The only downside was that it was still very wet underfoot.  I had been asked it I would provide some live tweeting enroute, which was fun, but that became harder as the meters piled up.

By the end of it, its fair to say I was knackered.  Sore feet and very cold, I really should have brought more layers for afterwards.  But a Pie and a Pint did much to restore spirits and taking the weight off the feet was also a good idea.  But I was really chuffed to be one of the first ones back, maybe that gym thing is paying off, not that it was a race but I certainly couldn’t have held that pace last year.

I think this is a great event and I have taken part in them all since they started in 2011.  I am already looking forward to next year – I just hope they book better weather.

Many thanks to those people who sponsored me, it is greatly appreciated.
