Asda headed for Kingsway!

Many people have complained about the stranglehold that Tesco seem to have, not only nationally but locally too.  So when Tesco was announced as the main store in the Kingsway Local centre, it was met with a mixed response.  On one hand it is great that we were actually getting a shop, but on the flipside, we have a Tesco just under the Bridge, and Tesco Express is notable for being more expensive that the bigger store.  That is why when  I heard this week that Asda was looking to put a store here, I was delighted, not only to have some more facilities, but to provide competition to Tesco, which means better value for money for residents.

Robert Hitchins, the landowner, is keen to see the land in use, and it was supposed to be for Office and/or warehousing, but in this current market, then it’s not really selling, therefore they are going to ask for a change of use and have been in discussion with Asda to provide some more local amenities.

If all goes to plan, then it could be in place by early next year, and that would be good.  We do need to keep an eye on the planning side though, as the road infrastructure needs to be able to cope with this change of use, and I’m not sure the junction, as it currently is, will cope and may need some modification.  But I’m sure there will be traffic evaluations done, we just need to ensure they are completed and be mindful of the effects.

It seems that there might finally be some momentum building in Kingsway.

Shame – a Co-op or Waitrose would have been nice; something completely different to the shops we already have available.

Dave, I agree with you to a certain extent, but we don’t really get much of a say in the matter, its down to an individual business to be willing to invest in an area. From what I have seen, not everyone was queuing up to purchase land.
