Yesterday, after Speeches, Questions and Answers, and a nervous wait for the result, Sophy Gardner was selected by Gloucester Labour Party as our candidate to fight the 2015 general election.
There was a great turn out to the hustings, which saw David Purchase, Sophy Gardner and Keir Dhillon put though their paces by the membership. We had opening statements from them all followed by just over an hour of Questions, ranging from Iraq, to Gloucester Tigers via the military covenant and their private members bill. All candidates gave good answers and the audience were certainly appreciative of the passion showed by all three.
After the vote was counted, it was announced that Sophy had won. I think for the first time ever, I jumped to my feet to applaud I was so pleased.
Sophy gave a great thank you speech, and for me the two main stand out point for me were, firstly that in all her time in the RAF, she had moved from place to place, but finally she had somewhere to call home, and secondly that no matter who voted for who, that is in the past. We have a common aim that can only be achieved with unity of purpose.
